What Is PVDF Coating ?


PVDF coating (polyvinylidene fluoride) is the best existing organic coating, offering great colour retention and corrosion resistance. It is made of 70% fluorocarbon resin and 30% acrylic resin, with special weather-resistant pigments. With fluorine resin as the main film-forming material, PVDF is a perfect protective coating for metal building panels, such as steel,stainless steel,aluminum and galvanized steel. Advantages of PVDF Coating

1. Excellent Weather Resistance

PVDF coating contains 70% fluorocarbon resin with a large number of F-C bonds, which determines its super stability. So it has superior resistance to weathering by ultraviolet light, moisture, or temperature. Its surface will not powder or fade for more than 20 years outdoors.

2. Super Corrosion Resistance

Thanks to its excellent resistance to chemicals, such as acid, alkali, salt, etc., PVDF coating will provide a protective barrier for the base metal. Besides, PVDF coating is 6-10 times thicker than the ordinary coating. The thick coating offers high surface hardness and good wear resistance.

3. Excellent High and Low Temperature Resistance

PVDF coating is applied to metal at a temperature of 200°C above, and on the lower surface using EP epoxy powder thermosetting resin, which can be used at 150 °C. After 10 times of freezing-thawing experiments, the resin layer did not fall off, heave, crack, peel, damage and other phenomena. The coating can be used in the temperature range of -60 ºC to 150 ºC for a long time.

4. Maintenance-free and Self-cleaning Performance

PVDF coating has very low surface energy, and the surface dust can be self-cleaned by rain. Besides, its maximum water absorption rate is less than 5% and its minimal friction coefficient is 0.15 to 0.17. So it will not stick to dust scale and oil.

2. Color Coat: Contains at least 70% PVDF resin by weight (industry standard for premium performance) blended with high-quality acrylic resins and premium inorganic pigments. This layer provides color and UV resistance. 
3. Clear Topcoat (Often used): A protective layer of clear pVDF resin (sometimes modified) that further enhances gloss retention, dirt pickup resistance, and chemical resistance.

3. How thick is the PVDF coating? 
A3: Total coating thickness typically ranges from 20 to 35 microns (0.8 to 1.4 mils). This is significantly thinner than polyester (PE) coatings but offers much better performance due to the resin chemistry.

A4: Primarily: 
1. Aluminum: Most common for wall cladding, soffits, and architectural elements.
2. Galvanized Steel & Galvalume (AZ): Widely used for roofing, wall panels, and structural profiles. Requires a compatible primer system for optimal corrosion resistance.

5. How durable is PVDF coating?
A5: Extremely durable, PVDF coatings are known for their ability to withstand decades of harsh weather exposure while retaining color and gloss significantly better than polyester (PE) or silicone-modified polyester (SMp) coatings. Lifespans of 20+ years are common.

6. Does PVDF coating fade? 
A6: PVDF coatings exhibit excellent fade resistance, far superior to PE or SMP. While all pigments fade slightly over decades under intense UV, PVDF minimizes this effect dramatically. High-quality inorganic pigments used with PVDF further enhance fade resistance.

7. Is PVDF coating easy to clean? 
A7: Yes. Its smooth, non-porous surface and chemical resistance make it highly durable, Dit. Polutants, and air generally rinse off easily with rain or mild cleaning solutions (water and mild detergent). Avoid harsh abrasives or solvents.
